TCU scores all five runs in second through fourth innings

By Ryan Schuler

April 24, 2012 (San Diego)--If the San Diego State baseball team could re-play the second through fourth innings of Saturday night’s game against Texas Christian University, they would.

TCU scored all five of its runs from the second through the fourth innings to defeat SDSU by a score of 5-1. The win improves the Horned Frogs’ overall record to 23-13 overall and 11-3 in the Mountain West, while the Aztecs fell to 18-23 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West play.

The Horned Frogs were able to score single runs in both the second and third innings, and three runs in the fourth inning to knock out SDSU starter Travis Pitcher. Pitcher’s line would read five runs allowed (three earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

In the other dugout, TCU starter Preston Morrison was fantastic on the mound, hurling seven innings, and only allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out seven.

The Aztecs would score their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cody Smith would single to lead off the inning. Smith would then advance on Greg Allen’s fielder’s choice. Tim Zier’s bunt single to the pitcher would load the bases, before Chris Wilson’s sacrifice fly to center field would plate Smith. This was the second straight game in which SDSU’s lone run came on a sacrifice fly by Wilson.

Perhaps the lone highlight of SDSU’s night was the pitching by Philip Walby, who proved able to stop TCU’s offense after their fourth inning outburst. Walby, who came on in relief of Pitcher, would finish the night throwing the final 5.1 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
